The Toyota RAV4 has been one of Kenya’s best-selling mid-size SUV imports for years. Reliable, strong on resale, and available in enough trim and engine combinations to fit almost any budget.

But “the RAV4” isn’t really one car. A base X-grade 2.0L petrol and a fully loaded Hybrid GR Sport can differ by well over a million shillings once landed in Kenya.

This guide walks through what each RAV4 trim actually gives you, how Japan’s grade names map to what you’ll see advertised locally, and what each one realistically costs to import,  so you can pick the right RAV4 for your budget.

Import Regulations – Is the Toyota RAV4 Eligible for Import Into Kenya?

The 8-Year Age Rule and the 2026 Cutoff

Kenya’s import regulations require that used vehicles be no more than 8 years old from the date of first registration at the time of export. In 2026, this means you can legally import a RAV4 first registered in 2019 or newer. Vehicles older than this are prohibited from entry.

    Right-Hand Drive Requirement

All vehicles imported to Kenya must be right-hand drive (RHD) . This aligns with Kenya’s traffic system and is why Japanese-spec RAV4s are the primary source for imports — US-spec left-hand drive RAV4s cannot be registered in Kenya.

    KEBS Roadworthiness Inspection (QISJ )

Before shipment, every imported vehicle must pass a KEBS pre-shipment inspection conducted in Japan by approved agencies . The inspection certificate must accompany the shipping documents. This ensures the vehicle meets Kenyan roadworthiness standards before it leaves Japan.

How Much Does It Cost to Import a Toyota RAV4 from Japan to Kenya? (Verified 22 June 2026)

The biggest cost driver is KRA’s CRSP valuation, the official price KRA uses to calculate duties, which is often significantly higher than your actual purchase price in Japan.

KRA does not calculate import duty based on what you actually paid for the vehicle in Japan. Instead, they use the Current Retail Selling Price (CRSP) — a standardized valuation that KRA believes the vehicle would sell for in the Kenyan market

In May 2025, KRA published a revised CRSP schedule, set to take effect on 1 July 2025, which raised import duty from 25% to 35% and updated the exchange rate baseline used to calculate CRSP values.

The Car Importers Association of Kenya (CIAK) sued, arguing the rollout skipped proper public participation, and the High Court suspended implementation pending a full hearing.

As of our last verification, the legal status of the new schedule was still unresolved, but car dealers continue to raise concerns of adjusted CRSP, meaning the rate actually applied to your RAV4 depends on which schedule is in force on the day your car clears Mombasa.

Therefore, don’t trust a number you find online . Always confirm with your clearing agent or KRA directly before you commit funds, and ask explicitly which CRSP schedule they’re quoting from.

Example: A 2019 Toyota RAV4 (2.0L petrol) typically lands in Kenya for roughly KSh 3.8M–4.6M all-in purchase price, shipping, KRA duty, and port clearing combined.

The Hybrid variant would generally land KSh 400,000–900,000 higher, mainly because of its higher CRSP base value, not because of a worse duty rate.

    Lets break that down

    Estimated total landed cost≈ KSh 5.0M–5.5M≈ KSh 4.3M – 4.6M

How to Avoid Overpaying (Or Getting Scammed) on a RAV4 Import

Fake auction sheets, advance-fee requests with no verifiable Kenyan office, and “too good to be true” C&F quotes are the most common ways first-time importers lose money.

We cover this in full detail in our guide to spotting fake import agents. Read it before you wire any deposit, regardless of who you’re buying through.

    FAQs

How much does it cost in total to import a Toyota RAV4 to Kenya? Expect roughly KSh 4.3M–4.6M all-in for a 2019 petrol RAV4, or KSh 5.0M–5.5M for a Hybrid, though your exact figure depends on the car’s specific CRSP listing and which duty schedule is active when it clears Mombasa.

What is the KRA import duty rate for a RAV4 right now? This is currently contested. The 2019 schedule applies a 25% import duty rate; a revised schedule proposing 35% was suspended by the High Court pending a legal challenge from the Car Importers Association of Kenya. Confirm with KRA or your agent which rate is being applied on your clearance date.

Is a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid cheaper to import than the petrol version? Not necessarily. The Hybrid’s higher CRSP base value typically outweighs any excise duty saving, so the petrol RAV4 is often the cheaper import on paper even though the Hybrid costs less to run.

What is the oldest RAV4 I can legally import in 2026? A RAV4 first registered in 2018 or later, calculated from the date it arrives at Mombasa rather than the date you purchase it. Build in a buffer for shipping delays.

Can I import a US-spec (left-hand drive) RAV4 to Kenya? No, except under specific duty-free returning-resident or diplomatic exemptions. Standard imports must be right-hand drive, which rules out most US-market stock.

How long does it take for a RAV4 to arrive from Japan to Mombasa? Roughly 25–28 days at sea, plus loading and clearance time — budget 6–8 weeks from confirmed purchase to a registered car in Kenya.

Does the CRSP court case affect a RAV4 I’ve already paid for? Possibly, depending on which schedule is in force on your car’s arrival date at Mombasa rather than its purchase date. Ask your clearing agent directly which schedule will apply before you finalise payment.

Was hesitant at first to transfer the deposit for the car, but as it turned out it my worries were unwarranted. Thank you for you honest and genuine experience. Definitely will be buying more cars through you!

In 2019 we bought the first car and it came after two and a half month as planned.
Now we are waiting for the fifth and sixth delivery of cars and motorcycles, in total we have bought 12 cars and were not dissatisfied with any of them. Full support with good pictures and documentation on the cars before the auctions have started.
After we won the auction, TokyoCarz has directly arranged good logistics with shipping both with RoRo and container directly to us in Sweden.
Many thanks for a well done job and we will continue cooperating with you for several years to come. / Anders

It is hard to know who to bid at Japan car auctioneers with. I tried TokyoCarZ when I was travelling overseas. I must admit I was nervous. They made my experience easy and went above and beyond for me. I have since bid with confidence multiple times as they earned my trust.
    A++++ experience. - Marcus
