Looking to import a car from Japan to New Zealand?

Whether you want a fuel-efficient Toyota Aqua, a Nissan Leaf EV, or a rugged Hilux, Japanese auctions offer incredible value. However,  navigating NZTA compliance, biosecurity inspections, and shipping can be overwhelming.

This step-by-step guide to importing a car from Japan to New Zealand covers costs, compliance, and how to avoid scams.

Why Import Cars from Japan to New Zealand

Popular Japanese imports in New Zealand are everywhere and for good reason.

Japanese vehicles offer low mileage, excellent maintenance, and rust-free chassis.

Kiwi buyers love the affordability, reliability, and access to the best hybrid cars imported from Japan, like the Toyota Aqua and Nissan Note e-Power. The RHD compatibility makes registration straightforward.

Compared to stock (One Price) vehicles from dealerships, Japan car auctions in NZ are the preferred method because:

    • Third-party grading – Grade 4+ means excellent condition

    • Verified mileage – Cross-referenced with Japan’s Shaken system

    • Transparent reports – Auction sheets document rust and repairs

    • Wholesale pricing – Bid directly, avoid dealer markups

For a deeper understanding, read our guide on how Japanese auctions work.

Import Regulations in New Zealand – NZTA & Biosecurity

New Zealand has strict import rules. The key requirements are:

    RequirementDetail
Age limitNo strict age limit, but vehicles must meet emissions standards (Clean Car Standard)
SteeringRHD only (Japan vehicles are compatible)
NZTA complianceEntry certification + compliance check required
BiosecurityMPI inspection required (cleanliness, soil, pest-free)
    Key portsAuckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Tauranga
Main taxes5% duty (if applicable) + 15% GST + ACC levy

Clean Car Standard: Vehicles with CO₂ emissions above the target incur charges. Hybrids and EVs generally earn credits.

Biosecurity requirements: MPI inspects all vehicles for soil, plant material, and pests. A cleaning certificate from an MPI-approved system in Japan is required.

Importing Cars from Japan vs Buying Locally

Japan offers rust-free chassis, lower mileage, and unique JDM models.

Australian imports may have higher mileage and more wear.

For hybrids and EVs, Japan’s selection is unmatched. Buying locally in NZ is convenient but often 20–30% more expensive.

Biosecurity Inspection – What You Need to Know

MPI inspects all imported vehicles for :

    • Soil or dirt (undercarriage, wheel arches)

    • Plant material or seeds

    • Pest contamination (including Brown Marmorated Stink Bug)

Pro tip: Clean your car thoroughly before shipping. A failed biosecurity inspection means costly cleaning fees . If contamination is found, the vehicle may be cleaned at your expense or reshipped .

For more details, read our biosecurity inspection requirements .

Was hesitant at first to transfer the deposit for the car, but as it turned out it my worries were unwarranted. Thank you for you honest and genuine experience. Definitely will be buying more cars through you!

In 2019 we bought the first car and it came after two and a half month as planned.
Now we are waiting for the fifth and sixth delivery of cars and motorcycles, in total we have bought 12 cars and were not dissatisfied with any of them. Full support with good pictures and documentation on the cars before the auctions have started.
After we won the auction, TokyoCarz has directly arranged good logistics with shipping both with RoRo and container directly to us in Sweden.
Many thanks for a well done job and we will continue cooperating with you for several years to come. / Anders

It is hard to know who to bid at Japan car auctioneers with. I tried TokyoCarZ when I was travelling overseas. I must admit I was nervous. They made my experience easy and went above and beyond for me. I have since bid with confidence multiple times as they earned my trust.
    A++++ experience. - Marcus
