The Mazda CX-5 and Toyota RAV4 are two of the most popular compact SUVs on Kenyan roads – and for good reason. Both offer reliability, practicality, and strong resale value. But which one is right for you?”*

This guide breaks down every key difference: price, fuel economy, interior quality, cargo space, driving dynamics, and resale value.

By the end, you will know exactly which SUV fits your lifestyle – whether you are a Nairobi commuter, a family driver, or a weekend adventurer.

For a broader understanding of how to source these vehicles from Japan, read our guide on

Pricing - Which one is Cheaper?

The Mazda CX-5 is generally the more affordable option, both new and used.

Used Import Pricing (Japan to Kenya):

ModelTypical Auction Price (USD)Landed Cost (KES approx.)
    Mazda CX-5 (2019–2021)$6,000 – 12,000KES 3.0M – 4.5M
    Toyota RAV4 Hybrid (2019–2021)$8,000 – 15,000KES 3.5M – 5.0M

Verdict: The Mazda CX-5 is cheaper to buy – both new and used. However, the RAV4’s hybrid fuel savings can offset the higher purchase price over time.

Fuel Economy – Which Saves More at the Pump?

The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid dominates this category.

    ModelFuel Economy (City/Highway/Combined)
    Mazda CX-5 (2.5L petrol)23 / 29 / 25 mpg
    Mazda CX-5 (Turbo)22 / 27 / 24 mpg
    Toyota RAV4 Hybrid (AWD)41 / 38 / 39 mpg

Kenya context: For Nairobi stop-start traffic, the RAV4 Hybrid’s fuel economy advantage is massive. A RAV4 Hybrid can achieve 15–18 km/L in city driving, while the CX-5 typically manages 8–10 km/L.

Verdict: The RAV4 Hybrid is the clear winner for fuel savings. If you drive long distances or commute daily, the fuel savings will add up quickly.

Interior Quality – Which Feels More Premium?

The Mazda CX-5 is famous for its near-luxury interior. Soft-touch materials, elegant design, and premium finishes make it feel like a more expensive SUV. Higher trims offer Nappa leather and real wood accents.

The RAV4 is practical and well-built, but Toyota focused on durability over luxury. Hard plastics are more common, and the design is functional but less stylish.

Verdict: The CX-5 wins for interior quality and premium feel. If you value cabin refinement, the Mazda is the better choice.

Cargo Space – Which Is More Practical?

The Toyota RAV4 offers significantly more cargo space.

ModelCargo Behind 2nd RowCargo with Seats Folded
Mazda CX-529.1 cubic feet59.3 cubic feet
Toyota RAV437.5 cubic feet69.8 cubic feet

Kenya context: For families with strollers, luggage, or weekend shopping, the RAV4’s extra space is a real advantage. The CX-5’s smaller boot may be tight for larger families.

Verdict: The RAV4 wins for cargo capacity. If you carry lots of gear, the Toyota is the practical choice.

Driving Experience – Which Is More Fun to Drive?

The Mazda CX-5 is one of the most enjoyable compact SUVs to drive. Sharp steering, minimal body roll, and responsive handling make it feel athletic and engaging. The optional turbo engine (227–256 hp) adds serious performance.

The RAV4 is comfortable and capable, but its hybrid system is tuned for efficiency over excitement. The continuously variable transmission (CVT) and softer suspension prioritize a smooth, quiet ride rather than sporty handling.

Verdict: The CX-5 wins for driving enjoyment. If you love driving and want an SUV that feels alive, choose the Mazda.

Reliability & Resale Value – Which Lasts Longer?

Both SUVs are highly reliable, but the RAV4 has a slight edge in resale value.

    FactorMazda CX-5Toyota RAV4
J.D. Power Reliability Score (out of 100)8277–80
    5-Year Depreciation42.4% lost30.3% lost
    Kenya Resale ValueStrongExcellent (higher)

Kenya context: The Toyota RAV4 holds value better than almost any other SUV in Kenya. The CX-5 also sells well, but the RAV4’s reputation for durability and hybrid fuel economy make it more sought-after.

Verdict: The RAV4 wins for resale value. However, the CX-5 is still a reliable, well-built SUV that will serve you well.

Which One Should You Choose? – Buyer Recommendations

Choose the Mazda CX-5 if you:

    • Value premium interior quality and style

    • Enjoy driving and want responsive handling

    • Want a cheaper upfront purchase price

    • Prefer standard all-wheel drive (AWD)

Choose the Toyota RAV4 if you:

    • Want exceptional fuel economy (hybrid)

    • Need maximum cargo space for family or gear

    • Prioritize resale value and long-term savings

    • Want a reliable, practical family SUV

Bottom line: The RAV4 excels in practicality, fuel efficiency (hybrid), resale value, and cargo space. The CX-5 offers a premium interior, better driving dynamics, and often a lower purchase price. Both are excellent choices for Kenyan buyers.

Was hesitant at first to transfer the deposit for the car, but as it turned out it my worries were unwarranted. Thank you for you honest and genuine experience. Definitely will be buying more cars through you!

In 2019 we bought the first car and it came after two and a half month as planned.
Now we are waiting for the fifth and sixth delivery of cars and motorcycles, in total we have bought 12 cars and were not dissatisfied with any of them. Full support with good pictures and documentation on the cars before the auctions have started.
After we won the auction, TokyoCarz has directly arranged good logistics with shipping both with RoRo and container directly to us in Sweden.
Many thanks for a well done job and we will continue cooperating with you for several years to come. / Anders

It is hard to know who to bid at Japan car auctioneers with. I tried TokyoCarZ when I was travelling overseas. I must admit I was nervous. They made my experience easy and went above and beyond for me. I have since bid with confidence multiple times as they earned my trust.
    A++++ experience. - Marcus
