Wondering how to import a Toyota Harrier from Japan to Kenya without overpaying?

A Nairobi professional asked us the same question. He needed one car for everything: business travel, city commuting, and family trips. Here is exactly what he paid, how long it took, and what he learned.

For a complete walkthrough of the process, read our full guide on importing cars to Kenya.

Why the Toyota Harrier? The Perfect Professional’s Car

Why choose the Toyota Harrier over rivals like the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V?

The Harrier checks every box for a Kenyan professional looking for a premium feel and superior comfort :

    • Business travel: Comfortable for long drives to Nakuru, Kisumu, or Mombasa.

    • Urban commuting: Smooth ride, excellent ground clearance for Nairobi roads.

    • Family needs: Spacious boot, 5-seater, ISOFIX child seat anchors, and premium safety features.

    • Resale value: Harriers hold value exceptionally well in Kenya.

Browse Harriers available for export to Kenya to see current options.

Toyota Harrier Hybrid or Petrol? Key Differences

The Toyota Harrier comes in two main engine options in Japan. Here is how they compare:

    Factor Petrol (2.0L) Hybrid (2.5L)
    Fuel economy ~12–14 km/L ~18–22 km/L
Excise duty (Kenya) ~25% ~15% (lower)
    Auction price $8,000–12,000 $10,000–15,000
Power Good for daily driving Smoother, more torque
Parts availability Widely available Good, but fewer hybrid specialists

    Pros of Petrol:

    • Lower purchase price at auction
    • Easier to service locally
    • More mechanics familiar with the engine

    Cons of Petrol:

    • Higher fuel costs over time
    • Higher excise duty (25% vs 15%)

    Pros of Hybrid:

    • Significant fuel savings (Nairobi traffic)
    • Lower import tax (excise duty ~15%)
    • Smoother, quieter drive

    Cons of Hybrid:

    • Higher auction price
    • Battery replacement cost (eventually)
    • Fewer hybrid specialists in Kenya

Our customer’s choice: He chose Harrier Hybrid because his daily commute through Nairobi traffic would deliver immediate fuel savings, and the lower excise duty offset the higher auction price.

Total paid: 28,470 USD or KSH 3,685,498

Local dealer price for a similar Harrier?

    Often 3,800,000 – 4,500,000 KSH.

Our customer saved over KSH 200,000 by importing.

For an estimate of your own import costs, choose the car you want and request a price quote through our website.

Why Import Instead of Buying Locally?

Local dealers import higher mileage units (80,000km+), the oldest legally allowed (7 years), and base trims.

Our customer wanted a low-mileage, well-specified Harrier with leather seats and the Z trim – rare locally and overpriced when available.

For a specific trim with low mileage, direct auction access wins every time.

Was hesitant at first to transfer the deposit for the car, but as it turned out it my worries were unwarranted. Thank you for you honest and genuine experience. Definitely will be buying more cars through you!

In 2019 we bought the first car and it came after two and a half month as planned.
Now we are waiting for the fifth and sixth delivery of cars and motorcycles, in total we have bought 12 cars and were not dissatisfied with any of them. Full support with good pictures and documentation on the cars before the auctions have started.
After we won the auction, TokyoCarz has directly arranged good logistics with shipping both with RoRo and container directly to us in Sweden.
Many thanks for a well done job and we will continue cooperating with you for several years to come. / Anders

It is hard to know who to bid at Japan car auctioneers with. I tried TokyoCarZ when I was travelling overseas. I must admit I was nervous. They made my experience easy and went above and beyond for me. I have since bid with confidence multiple times as they earned my trust.
    A++++ experience. - Marcus
