If you are searching for the best used Subaru to buy in 2026, you are asking the right question. Subaru has built something rare: a brand that earns loyalty without hype. Over 96% of Subarus sold in the last decade are still on the road today. That statistic alone tells you what you need to know.

But not every used Subaru is a smart buy. Some model years carry known engine issues. Others hold value so well that importing is barely worth it. Here are the top 5 best used Subaru models for 2026 — and why.

For a broader understanding of how to source these vehicles, read our guide on how Japanese auctions work .

Why Used Subarus Hold Up So Well

    Three things define a Subaru.

Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive comes standard on nearly every model. You do not pay extra for it. That alone separates Subaru from most brands, where AWD is a costly upgrade.

The Boxer engine sits low and flat, lowering the centre of gravity. The result is better balance, sharper handling, and a distinctly stable feel on the road.

Safety ratings are consistently top-tier. Subaru earns IIHS Top Safety Pick+ recognition year after year, largely thanks to the EyeSight driver-assist system.

These traits explain why Japanese auction Subarus often hold Grade 4 or higher condition ratings — and why importers keep coming back to them. If you are asking which used Subaru to buy, start here.

    1. Subaru Outback (2014+) – The Adventure Wagon

The Outback is a station wagon that behaves like an SUV. It offers generous cargo space, high ground clearance, and standard AWD. For buyers who want one vehicle for commuting, family duty, and weekend trips, it is hard to beat. As a most reliable used Subaru candidate, the Outback consistently ranks near the top.

Why import it: Japanese-market Outbacks are often better specified and lower mileage than local equivalents. The Outback’s versatility means it holds value well — you are not buying a depreciating asset.

What to watch: Check the CVT fluid history. Earlier CVT units require regular servicing to stay smooth.

    2. Subaru Forester (2016+) – The Practical SUV

The Forester is arguably the most sensible Subaru. High seating position, excellent visibility, expansive cargo space, and class-leading safety make it a favourite for families and commuters. In the best used Subaru models 2026 conversation, it is impossible to overlook.

Why import it: Forester values are strong but not inflated. Auction availability is high, which means more choice and competitive bidding. A Grade 4 example with documented service history is a genuinely safe purchase.

What to watch: The 2016+ generation resolved many earlier issues. Avoid pre-2014 models with known head gasket and oil consumption concerns.

    3. Subaru Crosstrek (2018+) – The Compact Explorer

The Crosstrek blends everyday efficiency with genuine off-road ability. It sits higher than most small SUVs and handles city streets and dirt trails with equal composure.

Why import it: Fuel economy is strong for an AWD vehicle. Japanese domestic market examples often come with trim and equipment not offered elsewhere. Used values are stable.

What to watch: Confirm ground clearance specifications. Some market variants differ slightly.

    4. Subaru Impreza (2017+) – The Budget AWD Hatch

The Impreza is one of the few compact cars with standard AWD. Available as a sedan or hatchback, it offers nimble handling and strong safety features at an accessible price.

Why import it: This is the entry point into Subaru ownership. Japanese auction prices for clean Imprezas are competitive, making it an excellent first import.

What to watch: CVT behaviour under load. Test drive where possible, or request a pre-bid inspection.

    5. Subaru Legacy (2015+) – The Overlooked Sedan

The Legacy is the forgotten Subaru. Buyers chase Foresters and Outbacks, leaving the Legacy undervalued. That is exactly why it is worth considering.

Why import it: Sedans offer better driving dynamics than SUVs, and the Legacy delivers Subaru’s signature AWD and Boxer engine in a lower, more efficient package. Auction prices reflect lower demand — which means better value for you.

What to watch: Confirm the 2015+ generation. Earlier models had more reported issues.

    Subaru Models to Avoid

Not every Subaru is a smart import. Skip the following:

    • Pre-2013 Outback – head gasket and oil consumption issues

    • Pre-2014 Forester – same engine concerns

    • High-mileage CVT models without service records – transmission replacement is expensive

Always request the auction sheet and verify the model year against known problem periods. This is essential when deciding which used Subaru to buy.

What to Check Before You Bid

    CheckWhy It Matters
Auction gradeGrade 4+ indicates excellent condition
Service historyConfirms regular oil changes and CVT maintenance
Mileage verificationCross-check against auction sheet and Shaken records
Undercarriage photosRust is the enemy of any used car
CVT and AWD functionRequest a pre-bid inspection for high-value models

    The Bottom Line

Subaru offers something few brands can match: standard AWD, proven reliability, and strong resale value — all in one package. Whether you choose the Outback, Forester, Crosstrek, Impreza, or Legacy, a well-maintained Japanese import is a genuinely smart purchase.

If you are still deciding on the best used Subaru to buy, start with the Outback for versatility or the Forester for family practicality. Both deliver the reliability Subaru is known for.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1: Which used Subaru model is the most reliable?
The Subaru Outback and Forester consistently rank as the most reliable used Subarus. The 2016 and 2017 Outback model years are particularly strong, while the 2017 Crosstrek is considered one of the most reliable models ever produced .

Q2: What is the best used Subaru to buy for a family?
The Subaru Outback is the top family choice. It offers generous cargo space, high ground clearance, standard AWD, and class-leading safety scores. The Forester is a close second for families wanting a taller seating position and excellent visibility .

Q3: Which Subaru models should I avoid when buying used?
Avoid the 2013–2014 Outback and Forester due to excessive oil consumption and early CVT issues. Also skip the 2018 Outback (electrical/infotainment problems) and the 2019 Ascent (transmission complaints). Pre-2013 Imprezas and the 2013 Crosstrek also have documented issues.

Q4: How many miles can a used Subaru last?
With proper maintenance, Subarus regularly exceed 200,000 miles. Many owners report reaching 250,000–300,000 miles. The key is regular oil changes and timely CVT fluid service, ideally every 60,000 miles.

Q5: Do Subarus have head gasket problems?
Older Subarus (pre-2013) had widespread head gasket issues. The problem was largely resolved in newer models, though some 2011–2015 models were affected by an oil consumption class-action settlement. Always check service history for head gasket repairs.

Q6: Is the Subaru CVT transmission reliable?
Early CVTs (2010–2015) had more issues, including shuddering and premature failure. Later generations (2019+) are significantly improved. Regular fluid changes every 60,000 miles are essential to longevity.

Q7: Which used Subaru has the best resale value?
The Subaru BRZ holds value best at around 76%, followed by the Impreza (69–71%), WRX (67–70%), and Crosstrek (66–71%). Subaru ranks second among mainstream brands for 5-year resale value behind Toyota.

Q8: What is the best used Subaru for winter driving?
All Subarus come standard with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, making them excellent in snow and ice. The Outback and Forester are the most popular winter choices. The Crosstrek is a good compact option with high ground clearance.

Q9: How much should I pay for a used Subaru Outback?
A 2021 Outback typically sells for around $22,000–$25,000, roughly $12,000 below its original MSRP. Older models (2016–2017) can be found for $12,000–$18,000 depending on mileage and condition.

Q10: Is the Subaru Forester or Outback better for me?
Choose the Forester for a taller seating position, better visibility, and a more upright SUV feel. Choose the Outback for a smoother ride, more cargo space, and a wagon-like driving experience. Both offer standard AWD and strong safety ratings.

In 2019 we bought the first car and it came after two and a half month as planned.
Now we are waiting for the fifth and sixth delivery of cars and motorcycles, in total we have bought 12 cars and were not dissatisfied with any of them. Full support with good pictures and documentation on the cars before the auctions have started.
After we won the auction, TokyoCarz has directly arranged good logistics with shipping both with RoRo and container directly to us in Sweden.
Many thanks for a well done job and we will continue cooperating with you for several years to come. / Anders

It is hard to know who to bid at Japan car auctioneers with. I tried TokyoCarZ when I was travelling overseas. I must admit I was nervous. They made my experience easy and went above and beyond for me. I have since bid with confidence multiple times as they earned my trust.
    A++++ experience. - Marcus
