Thinking about importing cars from Japan to Poland?

TokyoCarZ helps buyers in Poland access Japanese used cars through auctions, and direct stock with worldwide shipping support.

This guide covers everything you need to know from import taxes, customs clearance, shipping methods, and registration requirements, to the most popular Japanese cars imported into Poland in 2026.

Whether you’re a first-time importer or a JDM enthusiast, you’ll learn how to import confidently, reduce costs, and avoid common mistakes.

Why Import Cars from Japan to Poland

Japanese vehicles are known for good maintenance history, reliable condition, and strong value for money. Buyers in Poland often choose Japanese vehicles because of the wide selection, transparent auction system, and availability of both daily-use and premium models.

Polish buyers save 20–30% compared to local dealer prices, even after shipping, duties, and taxes. The famous Japanese “Shaken” inspection system ensures every vehicle meets strict quality standards before auction.

To understand how Japanese auctions work, read our guide on how Japanese auctions work .

    Import Regulations in Poland

Before shipping to Poland, buyers should confirm the current rules on vehicle age limits, inspection requirements, duties, taxes, and documentation.

    Poland import requirements include:

    • Vehicle age limit: No strict age limit, but vehicles must be left-hand drive (LHD). Right-hand drive cars cannot be registered for road use in Poland

    • Steering position: Left-Hand Drive (LHD) mandatory

    • Inspection requirement: Mandatory technical inspection after arrival; pre-shipment inspection recommended

    • Main taxes/duties: Customs Duty 10% + Excise Tax (akcyza) + VAT 23%

Excise Tax Rates (Akcyza) – 2026

    Vehicle TypeEngine CapacityExcise Tax Rate
    Petrol/Diesel≤2,000cc3.1%
    Petrol/Diesel>2,000cc18.6%
    Hybrid (HEV/PHEV)≤2,000cc1.55%
    Hybrid (HEV/PHEV)2,001–3,500cc9.3%
Mild Hybrid (MHEV)Per engine capacityReduced rates apply*
    Electric / Plug-in hybrid≤2,000cc0% (until 2029)

Mild hybrids (MHEV) qualify for reduced excise rates per Polish Ministry of Finance ruling (February 2026).

    Real-World Cost Example

A 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe AMG (3,000cc) with CIF value €26,500: (converted from 4,450,000 JPY):
    • Customs Duty (10%): €2,650
    • Excise Tax (18.6% for >2,000cc): €5,421
    • VAT (23% on €34,571): €7,951
    • Total taxes: €16,022
    • Port fees and transport: additional €500–1,000

Note: This vehicle exceeds 2,000cc, placing it in the higher 18.6% excise tax bracket. A smaller engine would pay significantly less tax.

Keep in mind that you will still need to allocate roughly 2,200 to 4,500 PLN (€500–€1,000) for port handling fees, inland tow-truck transport from the port to your city in Poland, and the technical headlight conversion.

Important deadlines: Excise tax must be paid within 14 days of import using the AKC-U declaration form. Failure to meet this deadline results in penalties.

    Shipping from Japan to Poland

TokyoCarZ can arrange Ro-Ro (Roll-on/Roll-off) and container shipping from Japan to Gdańsk or Gdynia. Transit time depends on vessel schedule, shipping method, and port congestion.

    Shipping MethodTransit TimeBest For
    Ro-Ro5–6 weeksBudget-friendly, running vehicles
Container (20ft/40ft)5–6 weeksHigh-value vehicles, extra protection

Customers can choose between budget-friendly RoRo shipping or container shipping for extra protection and multi-unit export.

    • Key destination port: Gdańsk or Gdynia
    • The German Route (e.g., Bremerhaven):
Shipping your car from Japan to Bremerhaven, Germany instead of directly to Gdańsk or Gdynia is the most popular strategy used by Polish importers to legally lower their tax bill.
      • The primary advantage is economic: Germany allows you to perform fiscal customs clearance, meaning you pay a lower VAT rate and completely avoid a compounding “tax on tax” effect. Consequently saving at  least save 9,279 PLN (approx. €2,190) on your total import costs.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1: Can I import used cars from Japan to Poland?
Yes. Poland allows used car imports from Japan. However, vehicles must be converted to left-hand drive (LHD) or purchased as LHD from Japan. RHD vehicles cannot be registered for road use in Poland.

2: What is the age limit for imported cars in Poland?
There is no strict age limit. However, older vehicles may face stricter emissions requirements for entry into low-emission zones in cities like Warsaw and Kraków.

3: Which port is usually used for shipping to Poland?
Gdańsk is the primary destination. Gdynia is the main alternative for container shipping.

4: Is inspection required before export to Poland?
Pre-shipment inspection is not mandatory but is highly recommended. TokyoCarZ provides auction sheets and can arrange pre-bid inspections to verify condition before purchase.

5: How long does shipping from Japan to Poland take?
Shipping takes approximately 5–6 weeks direct from Yokohama or Nagoya to Gdańsk or Gdynia.

6: Can I buy auction cars through TokyoCarZ?
Yes. TokyoCarZ provides direct access to Japanese auctions (USS, AUCNET, TAA) with pre-bid inspections and full documentation support.

7: What is the excise tax deadline for imported cars in Poland?
Excise tax (akcyza) must be paid within 14 days of import using the AKC-U declaration form. Late payment incurs penalties and interest.

8: Do mild hybrids qualify for reduced excise tax?
Yes. Under a February 2026 ruling by the Polish Ministry of Finance, mild hybrids (MHEV) qualify for reduced excise rates based on their engine capacity. Always verify your vehicle’s classification before import.

9: Can now legally register an RHD car from Japan in Poland?
Yes, provided it passes a modified technical inspection. Historically, registering an RHD car in Poland was incredibly difficult. However, following an EU Court of Justice ruling, Poland modified its laws.

Was hesitant at first to transfer the deposit for the car, but as it turned out it my worries were unwarranted. Thank you for you honest and genuine experience. Definitely will be buying more cars through you!

In 2019 we bought the first car and it came after two and a half month as planned.
Now we are waiting for the fifth and sixth delivery of cars and motorcycles, in total we have bought 12 cars and were not dissatisfied with any of them. Full support with good pictures and documentation on the cars before the auctions have started.
After we won the auction, TokyoCarz has directly arranged good logistics with shipping both with RoRo and container directly to us in Sweden.
Many thanks for a well done job and we will continue cooperating with you for several years to come. / Anders

It is hard to know who to bid at Japan car auctioneers with. I tried TokyoCarZ when I was travelling overseas. I must admit I was nervous. They made my experience easy and went above and beyond for me. I have since bid with confidence multiple times as they earned my trust.
    A++++ experience. - Marcus
